Getting started

How do I look up a word?

Open a PDF, ebook or picture, then touch and hold the word. A panel opens with its meaning. Choose Whole sentence to translate the sentence around it.

How do I choose my languages?

Tap the language pair at the top of the panel. Choose the language the book is written in and the language you want the answer in.

Can I try it without setting anything up?

Yes. Tap Try sample in an empty library and hold the word “mature”.

Translating

Does it work offline?

Apple's translation works without internet once you download the languages (Settings › Translation service › Apple Translation). Apple offers a limited list of languages.

What are API keys?

Online services such as Google, OpenAI, Gemini and DeepSeek can explain a word in its context. You can add your own key under Settings › Translation service. The key is stored in your iPad's Keychain and sent only to that service. Using a key may cost money on your account with that service; the app shows an estimate under Usage.

Where does my text go?

Nowhere, unless you turn on an online service. See the privacy policy.

Your documents

Which files can I open?

PDF, EPUB and AZW3 without copy protection, and pictures of pages from Photos, Files or the camera. Pagegloss reads a picture's text on your iPad, and the text recognition tools make scanned PDF pages selectable.

Where are my documents stored?

On your iPad, inside the app. Deleting the app deletes them, so keep your originals in Files.

Can I write notes with Apple Pencil?

Yes. A note can hold typed words and handwriting together; the handwriting is kept as you wrote it.
